IN THE ROOM
The following steps are a guide to my exploration of leadership as I sit in my kitchen!
Step 1: I was sitting in the kitchen when I completed this exploration. I took pictures of a microwave, faucet, television, coffee maker, the empty box for my granddaughter's toy and a clock.
Step 2: The objects are all things that I use everyday (the box is being recycled). The kitchen is a very busy space. For some reason, when all my sons are over, we are usually standing in the kitchen - it is a place they like to gather and talk. I am calm and focused right now, but I am usually working/cleaning the kitchen. At any moment, I may have a new task to complete (dinner, dishes, wiping counter tops). I am ready!
Step 3: What do these items that I photographed have to do with leadership?
Faucet: A good leader remembers the basic needs of all stakeholders. Water is the font of life!
Empty Box: A good leader should not be afraid to get rid of the garbage (even if it is really cute). Stay focused on what is important and clean/recycle the rest!
Microwave: A good leader looks for outside partners - another source to heat things up. I am thinking of popcorn in a microwave popping and changing shape! A good leader is not afraid to evolve.
Clock: A good leader is always respectful/mindful of time. The leader should value the time of others or of self.
Television: This picture is purposefully blurry. The world is always changing or moving. A good leader stays current with new innovations in education.
Coffee Maker: A good leader knows that a jolt of energy might be needed.
Step 4: In my experience as a leader, I discovered that my own energy and attitude can affect others. It is almost as if the people I would come into contact with would feed off that energy. If I was stressed and short-tempered, my secretary was that way to others. A good leader is human and will definitely have bad days. But, it is SO important to maintain a positive attitude so that the positive attitude will trickle down to everyone in the community.
Step 5: What does leadership mean to me? Leadership is about understanding the basic needs of students while working in a timely fashion seeking input from other voices in order to energize the community of learners!
